RIO DE JANEIRO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez says James Rodriguez has the hallmarks of an all-time great after the Colombian midfielder's brace eliminated La Celeste from the World Cup.
Rodriguez struck either side of halftime at the Maracana stadium to award Colobia a 2-0 victory over Uruguay in the round of 16 match, the first a superb volley from outside the penalty box after controlling the ball with his chest.
"Maradona, Messi, (Luis) Suarez, James Rodriguez. These players do certain things because they have a gift that makes them special," Tabarez said after the match.
Rodriguez is already being touted as favorite for the Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament's best player.
The Monaco playmaker has five goals and two assists from four matches, stepping up in the absence of injured striker Radamel Falcao.
Having progressed the World Cup's last eight for the first time in their history, Los Cafeteros will now face hosts Brazil in the quarterfinals.
Rodriguez said his team did not fear the July 4 clash in Fortaleza.
"Brazil is a tough rival with great players and a great history," Rodriguez said. "But I think that they should also be careful. We have great players and it's going to be a beautiful match. We are going to try to win."
Colombia coach Jose Pekerman lavished praise on Colombia's 22-year-old star.
"He has been fundamental," the Argentine said.
"He has given as a great deal in the tournament. He is always there when needed and has grown a lot as a player."
