BERLIN, June 27 (Xinhua) - Fulham's Sascha Riether joins Freiburg on an undisclosed fee, the German Bundesliga side confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.
The former German international played overall two years at the west London club. The defender spent the season 2012/2013 on loan at Fulham from Cologne, before he completed his transfer in the summer. He scored overall one goal in 66 appearances yet Fulham relegated into second division last season.
Riether returns to his club where he started his professional career. The 31-year-old defender played already five years, from 2002 until 2007, for Freiburg before he joined Wolfsburg to lift the Bundesliga title in 2009.
"Sascha is a very variable player. He proved his qualities with constant performances in the past few seasons. We are delighted that Sascha opted for Freiburg," said Freiburg's sporting director Jochen Saier.
"I had a wonderful time in London and yet I am looking forward to play in the Bundesliga again. The fact that I return to Freiburg is not for nostalgic reasons but because this club made a great development," Freiburg's new arrival Sascha Riether said.
Both sides agreed to keep silence over further transfer details such as transfer fee and how long Riether's contract runs.
Freiburg completed the last season on 14th position of the Bundesliga standings.
