Uruguayan media hail Luis Suarez

English.news.cn   2014-06-21 09:03:30

MONTEVIDEO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan dailies Friday hailed footballer Luis Suarez, whose double goals led the national team to a 2-1 victory over England as part of the initial group phase of the 2014 World Cup games.

Daily El Pais referred to Suarez as "His Majesty Luis IX," his jersey number, saying he had turned into "the King of Uruguayan football."

"He's the King, don't doubt it, the one who extends his domain each time he runs, steps on the field and blows away his adversaries with his steel backbone and indestructible soul," El Pais gushed.

Thanks to Thursday's win at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena, Uruguay, which without Suarez lost 1-3 to Costa Rica in its World Cup debut, accumulated three points towards qualifying for the next round.

Daily El Observador said Suarez' "dream performance" decided the outcome of the game, while La Diaria simply called him "A Monster."

Suarez' winning game was all the more spectacular since he had surgery as recently as May 22, and his participation at the World Cup had been in doubt.
