Australia's injured Mulligan to miss Holland World Cup match

English.news.cn   2014-06-18 09:24:15

SYDNEY, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Australian midfielder Mark Milligan has suffered a hamstring strain and will miss Thursday's do-or-die World Cup clash with the Netherlands, coach Ange Postecoglou announced on Wednesday.

His injury means the Socceroos will need to make at least two replacements to the team that lost 3-1 to Chile, the ABC reported.

Defender Ivan Franjic also suffered a hamstring injury in the Chile clash last Saturday and will be replaced with Ryan McGowan.

Midfield options to cover for Mulligan include James Holland, Masimo Luongo, Oliver Bozanic and Matt McKay with coach Postecoglou making the final decision before the game.

Postecoglou told a press conference the cooler weather could produce a faster match against the Dutch but vowed not to play a defence-first game plan.

"If you focus on one or two then somebody else will hurt you," he said. "From us it's about collective.

"But again, if we just emphasize on shutting down, I think you' ve lost before you start.

"We've said right from the start that [a defence-first approach is] not why we came to the World Cup."
