LONDON, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Britain's news media published positive comments on England's World Cup opener which was won by Italy 2-1, praising Roy Hodgson's team for their efforts.
"The defeat was no disgrace. The chances were created and spurned by Roy Hodgson's team also," the Telegraph said. "England can still progress. Group D does not mean death. Uruguay and Costa Rica can both be beaten."
The Guardian singled out 19-year-old forward Raheem Sterling for his outstanding efforts, saying "he had a wonderfully exuberant performance and looked so utterly calm at the biggest stage of the world. It was not only his technique which stood out, though, he was everywhere."
British media also discussed the performance of Wayne Rooney who worked tirelessly and set up England's goal but lost his spark later on. The Telegraph said England needed to make a hard decision over Rooney and his position before the Uruguay game.
