MONTEVIDEO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Wanderers led Uruguay's Closing Tournament after its 2-1 victory over rival Defensor during the weekend.
Wanderer's win in the next to last game of the tournament toppled Penarol from its top spot, as Penarol tied Liverpool 1-1.
Wanderers also ratified its overall lead for the year, which combines scores from the Opening and Closing tournaments.
A total of 31 points puts the Wanderers in the lead of the Closing Tournament, with a point ahead of Penarol, while the annual scoreboard gives it 58 points, two points more than Danubio, winner of the Opening Tournament in December.
The game Sunday saw home-team Defensor take an early lead with a goal in minute 7, but the Wanderers quickly recovered with a goal in minute 18 and another in minute 79.
"Wanderers was the most loyal to a (style of) play, I don't know if it was the best, but we are .. being loyal to our style," said coach Alfredo Arias.
The winner of the 2013-2014 football season will emerge from a series of final games between the winners of the Opening and Closing tournaments, and the annual scoreboard.
