BERLIN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Thomas Tuchel resigns as Mainz coach with immediate effect one year ahead of schedule, the club announced at an official press conference on Sunday.
One day after the Bundesliga season final, Mainz confirmed rumours that coach Thomas Tuchel asked to be released from his contract prematurely. Tuchel informed club manager Christian Heidel in January about his resignation. However, the club and coach agreed to keep silence until the end of the season.
"Unfortunately, our success from this season fade into the backlight with this issue but we have to announce that the cooperation with Thomas Tuchel and Mainz ended with immediate effect," club manager Christian Heidel said at the official press conference.
Tuchel told his club manager that he would like to take a break but yet the coach has been linked to other Bundesliga clubs. " Thomas told me in January that it was time for new ideas in Mainz and that he would not continue after the end of the current season. "
The 40-year-old coach took the helm in Mainz when he moved up as youth coach to become coach of the first team in 2009. Since then he established fast paced and offensively minded soccer strategies.
"We did everything to bind Thomas until 2015 as he assembled the whole team. We won't void the contract and Thomas knows that. He cannot join another team without our permission. With that said, we won't agree on a transfer until June 2015."
Mainz and Tuchel completed the season on 7th place with 53 points to clinch UEFA Europa League qualification. During his five years at Mainz he earned 65 victories, 44 draws and 61 defeats. He reaped 1.41 point per game and has a better record than former Mainz coach Juergen Klopp.
"You wont hear a bad word about Thomas. He is an excellent coach with an excellent personality. We had five great years with him," Heidel added.
