MADRID, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Former Spanish athlete, Yago Lamela was found dead at his home in the north of Spain, it was reported by local newspaper "La Nueva Espana" on Thursday.
The 36-year-old long jumper won the silver medal in the 1999 World Championships celebrated in Seville and then won bronze four years later in the 2003 World Championship held in Paris.
Lamela also won a string of indoor medals including silver at the 1999 Indoor World Championships in Maebashi (Japan) and another World indoor silver medal in Birmingham 2003 as well as silver medal in the 2002 European Indoor Championships.
His jump of 8.56 meters in Maebashi held the European Indoor record for 10 years before it was finally broken by Sebastian Bayer.
However, after those successes Lamela began to suffer a long series of injury problems in his Achilles tendon.
These problems stopped him competing in the 2004 Athens Olympics and forced his eventual retirement in 2009.
Lamala had suffered from bouts of depression and had even been hospitalized as a result of psychiatric problems.
