SYDNEY, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Australian world surfing champion Mick Fanning has progressed to the quarterfinals of the Quicksilver Pro 2014 in Queensland, local media reported on Tuesday.
Matched against local surfer and rising star in the fifth round at Snapper Rocks, Gold Coast, on Tuesday morning, Fanning posted the highest score of the morning, eliminating Crews 18.40 to 10.27.
Fanning narrowly lost his round-four heat earlier on Tuesday morning to Brazilian young gun Gabriel Medina but hit his straps in the elimination fifth round.
Fanning and Medina will again meet in the quarterfinals.
"It finally felt like everything was coming together in that heat," three-time world champion Fanning told local reporters after his win over Crews.
"These are the kind of conditions I've been training in all year here. To get the scores I did, it feels like I am right on track."
