BERLIN, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Berlin failed to grab decisive points against bottom side Freiburg, to open the 23rd round of the German Bundesliga on Friday.
Hertha Berlin squandered the chance to tighten their place in the top six as the hosts shared the spoils with Freiburg following a goalless draw after 90 minutes. Thus, Freiburg remain in relegation zone.
The hosts nearly caught a bright start as Sami Allagui pulled just wide with 20 seconds into the game. Freiburg, that were mostly defensively orientated, worked out their first chance at the 8th minute when Berlin goalkeeper Thomas Kraft had to defuse Admir Mehmedi's deflected shot on target.
Berlin's Marcel Ndjeng created the best chance for the hosts when the midfielder headed just wide of the left post. However, the visitors had arguably the best chance to break the deadlock through Mehmedi, who was unable to overcome Kraft following a square pass by Jonathan Schmid at the 44th minute.
Freiburg's best man had another chance to break through tie but Thomas Kraft tipped his effort over the bar to deny the opener after the restart. Meanwhile Freiburg's custodian Oliver Baumann denied Adrian Ramos twice to secure one point for his side on the road.
The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: front runners Bayern Munich encounter fourth placed Schalke, runners-up Leverkusen clash Mainz, third positioned Dortmund see Nuremberg, bottom side Braunschweig meet Monchengladbach, Bremen host Hamburg for the Northern derby and Augsburg take on Hannover.
