Kohli's ton scripts India's win over Bangladesh in Asia Cup

DHAKA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Virat Kohli's ton helped India to start their Asia Cup campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh on Wednesday at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium at Fatullah on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital Dhaka.

Batting first, Bangladesh set a challenging total of 279 runs for seven wickets in the second match of the 12th Asia Cup one-day cricket tournament that began on Tuesday.

Riding on 136 runs from Kohli, India chased down the target in 49 overs with 6 wickets in hand.

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami picked up four wickets while other pacers -- Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Aaron and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up one wicket each.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim scored highest 117 runs for Bangladesh, who finished runners-up in the previous edition of the tournament. Opener and wicket keeper-batsman Anamul Haque also scored 77 runs for the hosts.

India won the toss and decided to bowl first in the second match of the five-way battle for regional supremacy which is to be fought among four Test-playing nations -- Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and an ICC (International Cricket Council) associate Afghanistan.

Lasith Malinga's five-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka Tuesday to start their Asia Cup campaign with a 12-run win over Pakistan, which will take Afghanistan on Thursday in third match of the tournament.

All the five teams will play four matches each and will be rewarded 4 points for victory and 2 points for tie or no result.

After the preliminary round, the two teams with the maximum points will qualify for the final.

The 2012 Asia Cup was the 11th edition of the tournament that was also held in Bangladesh. Pakistan won the tournament by beating Bangladesh in the final by 2 runs.
