BERLIN, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Yunus Malli and Eric Maxim Choupo- Moting helped Mainz to grab three points at the opener of round 21 in Bundesliga on Friday.
Both sides staged an evenly balanced first half yet goal- scoring opportunities remained a rare occurrence.
Things changed at the second half as Hannover nearly grabbed the opener by courtesy of Artjoms Rudnevs but for all that the striker headed over the bar.
Mainz cut a better figure in front of Hannover's goal as Yunus Malli overcame goalkeeper Ron Robert Zieler following the through ball by Nicolai Mueller at the 51st minute.
Choupo-Moting almost doubled the lead before Mainz custodian Loris Karius denied Szabolcs Huszti's hammer at the 53rd minute.
Hannover frenetically pressed for the equalizer but Mainz remained dangerous on the counter attacks. Consequently Choupo- Moting sealed the deal following a successful counter attack to tap into the open goal in the dying minutes of the game.
It is the second straight win for Mainz meanwhile Hannover suffered the second loss in row. Mainz climbed from 9th to 7th place meanwhile Hannover stay on 10th place.
