SOCHI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sven Kramer will not skate the 1,500 meters speed skating at the Olympics in Sochi on Saturday, the Dutch speed skater said on Wednesday via Twitter.
"A very tough decision, but I have decided not to skate the 1,500m race," Kramer wrote. "Thus to stay focused on my 10,000m and the team pursuit event."
Last Saturday Kramer won his first gold at the Sochi Olympics by winning the 5,000 meters. He is also favorite to capture a gold medal on the 10,000 meters on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The final of the team pursuit will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22.
During the Wintergames in Vancouver in 2010 Kramer grabbed gold on the 5,000m and a bronze medal on the team pursuit event. He was disqualified on the 10,000m.
Jan Blokhuijsen, who got a silver medal on the 5,000 meters in Sochi, will replace Kramer on the 1,500m event. He will compete with fellow Dutchmen Mark Tuitert, who defends is title, Stefan Groothuis and Koen Verweij.
