BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini on Sunday defeated in four sets Argentine player Carlos Berlocq and granted Italy the qualification to Davis Cup quarter finals, where Italians will face the winning team between Britain and the United States.
With a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 and 6-4, Fognini (15) defeated Berlocq in the match played in the Municipal Skating Rink from Argentina' s city of Mar del Plata, at 400km south of Buenos Aires.
The match, played in a clay court, lasted 3 hours and 38 minutes.
The score of the Italy-Argentina series is 3-1, which granted the European country to qualify to quarter finals though there is still one more game to be played.
On Friday, the score was 1-1 with the victories of Berlocq (44) against Andreas Seppi (31) at 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, and of Fognini against Juan Monaco (40) with 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2.
In the doubles match played on Saturday, the Italian pair Fognini-Simone Bolelli won against Eduardo Schwank-Horacio Zeballos with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 and 6-4.
