BERLIN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Bayer Leverkusen's Robbie Kruse suffered a serious knee injury in training to miss the rest of the season, the club announced on its official homepage on Saturday.

The Australian international winger suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee during a training session, an MRT scan revealed today.

Thus, the 25-year-old will miss the second half of the campaign. Kruse joined the "Werkself" in April 2013 to make two goals in 14 matches. He is since 2011 part of the "Socceroos" , Australia' s national soccer team, where he scored three goals in 28 caps. However, it is unknown if he can fully recover until the FIFA 2014 World Cup.

His current club sit on second place with 37 points, seven points behind front-runners Bayern Munich.
