LISBON, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Benfica beat Porto 2-0 at Luz stadium on Sunday with goals by Rodrigo and Garay to clinch first place in the Portuguese league.
The winners had held one-minute silence before the game in memory of Eusebio, the country's football icon who passed away last Sunday.
Porto had greater possession of the ball in the first half but didn't create much danger in opening minutes. The closest Porto got scoring early in the game was in the 10th minute through Jakson Martinez, following a low cross by Carlos Eduardo.
Rodrigo put Benfica ahead in the 13th minute with a left footed effort that went to the top left corner. He scored from the left side of the box, following assistance by Lazar Markovic.
FC Porto was very close to scoring just before half time, again through Martinez, but his effort from close range missed to the left.
Following a cross by Enzo Perez, Ezequiel Garay closed the scoring in the 53rd minute with a close-ranged effort to the center of the net.
Rodrigo almost scored shortly after but his right footed shot went too high.
The game became heated towards the end, when Danilo gained a second yellow card and was dismissed.
Porto's Ricardo Quaresma won a free kick in the 89th minute, on the left wing, after a foul by Lazar Markovic but Mangala's header was too high and went wide.
