HOBART, Australia, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The fifth day of Hobart International Tennis Tournament on Thursday saw all the semi- finalists for women's singles' and doubles' fighting out of their way to the final stage of the week-long tournament.
Singles' top seed Samatha Stosur has gradually gained her pace at the major tournament immediately before this year's final Grand Slam, the Australian Open, to be opened next week in Melbourne.
Probably inspired by her hard-won victory on Wednesday against France's young talent Kristina Mladenovic, Stosur delivered her most complete performance of the season against Serbian world No. 34 Bojana Jovanovski to breeze into the semi-finals.
The 2011 U.S. Open champion has been desperate to better her second-round exit at the Australian Open last year, and her best effort in Melbourne of the fourth round in 2010.
With second seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium being eliminated by Spanish qualifier Garbine Muguruza on Thursday night, apart from Stosur, there is only one seeded player, 7th seed Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, who has secured a berth in the semi-finals.
The last of the semi-final berth went to Estrella Cabeza Candela, who wiped out world no. 60 Monica Niculescu in a two-hour- forty-minute marathon match on Thursday.
For the doubles', second seeds Zhang Shuai of China and Lisa Raymong of the U.S. had secured their berths in the semi-finals a day earlier and therefore enjoyed a day's rest on Thursday. Fourth seeds Chan Yung-Jan of Chinese Taipei and Janette Husarova of Slovakia also made to the semi-final stage.
They will compete against Lara Arruabarrena/Silvia Soler- Espinosa and Niculescu/Zakopalova respectively on Friday.
