PARIS, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Former F1 world champion Michael Schumacher is in critical conditions after being injured in a skiing accident on Sunday morning in Meribel, Savoie, southeastern France, local media reported.
According to the University Hospital Center of Grenoble, Isere, where he has been admitted, the German was "in a critical situation" on Sunday evening, French newspaper Le Figaro said on its website.
"When he arrived, he was in a coma and suffered from serious head trauma, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," confirmed the hospital in a statement published in the evening.
The 44-year-old Schumacher, who has a private residence in the station on the Trois Vallees, Savoie, skied on a helmet in the company of his 14-year-old son when he fell sharply against a rock, Le Parisien reported on its website.
He was first transported by helicopter to a hospital in Moutiers, Savoie, and then transferred to the University Hospital Center of Grenoble.
