MADRID, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Saturday night could be very special in the Vicente Calderon Stadium as Atletico Madrid could go top of the BBVA Primera Liga in Spain for 24 hours and possibly more.
A draw would lift Atletico to the top of the table for at least 24 hours, as Barca play their league game away to Getafe on Sunday night.
However, should Atletico win their match at home to Levante, then Barcelona would be obliged to win in Getafe by as many goals as Atletico otherwise it would be the team fronm the capital who spends the Christmas holidays looking down on the rest of the teams in the league, like a star from the top of a Christmas tree.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone was asked about his philosophy at an awards ceremony on Thursday night and explained it was a question of taking things one game at a time.
"How is a doctor going to operate? He has to take it step by step," said Simeone, who then likened his task to that of an architect.
"We all want our home to look good, but if the foundations are not solid and the supports have not been put up correctly then it's not worth anything," he continued.
Simeone saw his side qualify for the last 16 of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night and the Cup holders were able to rest key players in their game against third tier San Andreu.
That means he will be picking his strongest available team against Levante with 17-goal striker Deigo Costa leading the attack, supported by Arda Turam and perhaps David Villa.
Simeone has made hard-work and organization the virtue of his side with players such as Costa, Koke and Arda putting in the moments of magic which lifts them way above the pack, while others such as Gabi and Raul Garcia supply the hard work ahead of a solid defense led by Joao Miranda and Diego Godin.
Meanwhile Joaquin Caparros has done his habitual good work on Levante, taking a side with limited resources and molding them into an outfit that is tough to break down and with one of the best away records in Spain.
There is no doubt that if they want to go top of the table Atletico will have to work hard, but there is also a feeling that if they open the scoring, there will be no way back for Levante and it will be a case of trying to score as many goals as possible and then keeping the fingers crossed to see what Barca can do in Getafe.
