LISBON, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sporting beat Belenenses 3-0 at Lisbon's Alvalade stadium on Saturday in the 13th round of the Portuguese league to clinch first place with five points clear.
Adrien Silva's penalty kick in the 28th minute sent Matt Jones the wrong way and put Sporting ahead 1-0. Andre Martins scored another in the 53rd following a pass by Andre Carrillo and Wilson Eduardo's effort in the 85th from inside the area finished off the victory.
Despite a timid start, Sporting dominated the game especially in the second half, with Colombian forward Fredy Monteiro wasting a chance just minutes after half time.
Mamadou Diawara's ankle injury forced a change for the visitors in the second half bringing on Fabio Sturgeon to replace him.
The Lions are now isolated at the top of the league for the first time in nine years with 32 points.
The visitors are now 13th in the Portuguese league with 11 points.
