GABORONE, Oct.29 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's men and women national volleyball teams are targeting their first ever appearances at the 2014 FIVB women's and men's world championships following impressive performances in the region.
Speaking to the media Tuesday on the arrival of the women team from Zambia, Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) President Daniel Molaodi said the victories mean the sport is progressing the right direction in Botswana.
Molaodi said the federation will make sure that the teams are prepared adequately before the final qualifiers as they are going to play tougher opponents, adding that their target is for both teams to make it to the world championships.
Botswana's men and women teams are now left with only one hurdle to secure respective spots at the world championships after winning gold in regional qualifiers to book a place in the third and final round of African qualifiers.
The men's team won all their matches in the southern Africa Zone 6 qualifiers hosted by Botswana at the beginning of October, reaching the final stage of qualifiers slated for Algeria in January 2014.
They had to overcome Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia to finish top and will be joined by Zambia at the final qualifier stages. Only three teams will represent Africa at the championships to be played in Poland.
Botswana's women volleyball team returned from Zambia this week where they also grabbed gold to proceed to the final qualifiers stage.
Botswana claimed the gold medal in the Zone 6 Qualification Tournament (Pool R) without dropping a single set in all their five games.
Botswana will be grouped in Pool 1 in the final qualification tournament to be held in Algeria in January 2014, while Mozambique will join Kenya in Pool 2. Women's championships will be hosted by Italy.
