SANTO DOMINGO, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Six teams will compete in the baseball winter season in Dominican Republic which begins Friday, including the participation of Dominican former Major Leaguer Manny Ramirez, as well as Hanley Ramirez and Erick Aybar.
The official ceremony will be held Friday night in Tetelo Vargas stadium, in San Pedro de Macoris, at 72 kilometers east of Santo Domingo, during the game between the 2012 champion team Leones del Escogido and Tigres del Licey, one of the most popular teams in Dominican Republic.
Also in San Pedro de Macoris, Estrellas Orientales team will receive Toros del Este, while in Santiago city, at 155 kilometers north of Santo Domingo, Aguilas Cibaenas will face Gigantes del Cibao.
Tigres de Licey and Aguilas Cibaenas are the teams which have won most championships (20), though Leones del Escogido has won the last three tournaments including 2012.
The winner of this season will represent Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, the regional annual tournament gathering the winning teams of the professional leagues of Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico.
Since 1970, Dominican Republic has won the most titles, followed by Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico.
