THE HAGUE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Ajax captain Siem de Jong seems ready for a comeback earlier than anticipated, after having recovered from a pneumothorax, he said on the Ajax website on Thursday.
One month ago after the Eredivisie match against AZ (3-2 loss) the 24-year-old De Jong visited the hospital, where examination showed he had suffered a pneumothorax. The recovery period was expected to be six weeks.
However, on Thursday De Jong returned to the squad already for a full group training. "I feel good," he said on the Ajax website.
"Of course my condition has gone downwards a bit, but not that much. Maybe I can return to the squad on Saturday for the match against PEC Zwolle. We will decide on that today or tomorrow. Of course I cannot play a whole match, I have to stay calm."
Besides De Jong Ajax coach Frank de Boer also welcomed back Daley Blind, Ricardo van Rhijn, Thulani Serero and Joel Veltman from injuries.
Reigning champions Ajax, currently fourth in the Eredivisie, will play league leaders PEC Zwolle on Saturday in Amsterdam. Next Wednesday Ajax will visit FC Barcelona in the Champions League.
