THE HAGUE, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch football association KNVB has officially expressed its interest to propose Amsterdam as one of the host cities during Euro 2020, the KNVB announced on Wednesday.
The municipality of Amsterdam, Ajax stadium the Amsterdam Arena and the KNVB will now further discuss the possibilities of a definite bid. Amsterdam already stated in August that the city wanted to be part of the 2020 European Championships.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the European football association UEFA, Euro 2020 will be held in 13 different countries. Twelve cities may host three group phase matches and one 16/quarterfinal match. The 13th city will organize the semifinals and the final. From the quarterfinals, a stadium capacity of 60,000 people is required.
Although the 53,000-seat Amsterdam Arena currently does not meet the standard, it could be expanded to a capacity of 65,000.
Rotterdam was also interested to be the Dutch host city at the 2020 European Championships, but due to the cancelation of a new stadium plan, Amsterdam was the only remaining candidate.
Candidates should show their interest to the UEFA until Sept. 12. Expectations are that a majority of European countries will show their interest. A final bid must be sent to the UEFA by April 25, 2014. In Sept. 2014, the UEFA Executive Committee will decide on the appointment of the host cities.
