KIEV, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The 4th Kiev International Marathon attracted a record 2,000 participants from Ukraine and abroad Sunday, becoming one of the biggest events of its kind in Eastern Europe, event spokesperson Lesya Semchishin told Xinhua on Monday.
"The marathon gathered amateur runners and athletes from 40 countries, including Ukraine, Russia, the United States, Germany, Poland and other countries," Semchishin said.
Before the race, runners observed a minute of silence to remember and honor the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings, Semchishin said.
He added that the phrase "I run for Boston" was the slogan of this year's marathon.
The competition with the 22,500 U.S. dollar winning prize for both men and women champions was held in the central streets of the Ukrainian capital.
Andrew Naumov from Donetsk won the men's category, while Tatiana Rybalchenko from Kharkov was the first among women.
The competition was jointly organized by Kiev City State Administration and Kiev Athletics Federation.
