HANOI, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's football national squad has improved its standing by climbing up five places on the latest FIFA list, to rank 129th, local media reported on Tuesday, quoting sources from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
Specifically the Vietnamese football national team still holds the top ranking in the Southeast Asian region, reported by the Government Office's website, adding that the good news comes from FIFA regulation on checking points, as Vietnamese players were free of competition during February 14 to March 11.
Thailand ranks second in the Southeast Asian region and 135th in the world ranking, followed by the Philippines in the 145th position.
Meanwhile, Chinese Hong Kong, the rival of Vietnam in the upcoming ASEAN Cup, dropped to 159th place. However, it is full of energy after having a draw with Uzbekistan in the first leg. Head coach of Hong Kong team has demonstrated a well-prepared plan for the match with Vietnam on March 25, said the report.
