TAIYUAN, China, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Taiyuan will host the 4th World University Dragon Boat Racing Championship during the Dragon Boat Festival in June, Taiyuan Sports Bureau announced.
Around 1000 competitors from 50-60 dragon boat teams, including Harvard University and other 9 universities among the top 100 universities in the world, will take part in the tournament.
During the event, racing teams will compete in men's, women's and mixed group's 250-meter, 500-meter and 2000-meter races.
According to Chang Jinfa, director of Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), dragon boat races are not only held in China but also around the world, including the United States, Russia, Canada, South Korea etc.
In 1983, dragon boat racing became a Chinese formal non-Olympic event, and had not been accepted as a formal event of Asian Games and East Asia Games until 2010.
The dragon boat races are held across the nation during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. And it has been listed in the national nonmaterial cultural heritage lists.
The organizing committee has extended an invitation to 80 teams of nearly 20 countries and regions. Preparation for the competition is under way.
