HAVANA, March14 (Xinhua) -- Ivan Cambar, 77km bronze medal winner at the London 2012 Olympic Games, led a Cuban team to compete at the XXXII International Weightlifting Tournament, " Manuel Suarez in Memoriam", on Thursday.
Representatives from Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba competed in the five-day tournament at the multipurpose hall Guernica, in the central-southern province of Cienfuegos.
The participants compete in eight divisions for males and seven female. The Cuban delegation is also headed by 85km double world medalist Yoelmis Hernandez.
During the previous edition held in the western province of Matanzas, Cuba won the first place in the men's category, while Ecuador was crowned in the women's counterpart.
The most of these athletes participating at the championship consider it as part of their preparation for the upcoming Pan American Weightlifting Championships to be held in Caracas, Venezuela, from June 22 to 30.
The tournament "Manuel Suarez in Memoriam" is held in Cuba since 1980, the same year the island's weightlifting recorded in Moscow its most outstanding performance in the Olympic Games with the gold medal achieved by Daniel Nunez.
