HAVANA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Athletes from Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Chile, Nicaragua and the host country Cuba, have confirmed their participation in the 32nd International Weightlifting Tournament "Manuel Suarez in Memoriam", to be held in the central southern city of Cienfuegos from March 14 to 18.
The "Guernica" Multipurpose Room in Cienfuegos will be the tournament's venue. The room was totally renovated and is ready for the weight lifting competition, officials from the Cuban Sports Institute told the press.
The tournament has eight divisions for men and seven for women, said the organizers.
Cuba started to organize the International Weightlifting Tournament in 1980 and Cienfuegos hosted it for the first time in 1996.
In the previous edition, held in the western city of Matanzas, Cuba stood top in men's categories, while Ecuador was first in women's categories.
The Cuban weightlifters' best performance in Olympic Games was in Moscow in 1980, where they won two medals, one gold and one bronze.
