RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Arsenal loanee Andre Santos scored his first goal since joining Gremio on a season-long loan as the Brazilian club swept to a surprise 3-0 victory over local rivals Fluminense in their Copa Libertadores clash on Wednesday.
Fellow newcomers Eduardo Vargas, on loan from Napoli, and Argentine striker Hernan Barcos were also on target for the Porto Alegre side at Rio's Engenhao Stadium.
Despite the emphatic victory, Gremio coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo said his team still had scope for improvement.
"This team is only going to get better as the players get used to playing with each other," the former Real Madrid and Brazil boss said.
"We are going to improve as the season goes on. We have a great squad and now we have to show that on the pitch."
In other Copa Libertadores fixtures on Wednesday, San Jose drew 1-1 with Corinthians, Velez Sarsfield overcame Deportes Iquique 3-0 and Huachipato suffered a 3-1 home loss to Caracas.
