GENEVA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- World No. 16 Kei Nishikori of Japan announced to withdraw from next week's Basel indoor ATP tournament after failing to recover from an ankle injury.
"I had an MRI on my right ankle and unfortunately will not be able to play Basel," said the 22-year-old on his Facebook page.
He was the runner-up of the 2011 tournament, losing only to Roger Federer in the final.
"Very disappointed as I had such great memories there last year. I am now working very hard with my team to get healthy and am looking forward to Paris."
Nishikori beat Canada's Milos Raonic to become the first Japanese player to win the Japan Open earlier this month, before he suffered an early defeat at the Shanghai Masters.
