Flamengo must improve off the pitch: Liedson

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Former Portugal international striker Liedson has criticized his club Flamengo amid revelations the Rio outfit has not paid its players since August.

Flamengo, Brazil's most popular team, slipped to 14th in the league standings on Wednesday following a 3-2 loss to Corinthians at Sao Paulo's Pacaembu Stadium.

But it is the club's off-field situation that is causing most concern to the former Sporting Lisbon star and his teammates.

"Things are happening here that shouldn't be, but we have to keep working," Liedson said on Thursday.

"The time will come when the club will have to pay up. I depend on my salary just like the rest of the players. Flamengo has to improve off the pitch too."

Liedson's candid comments came as former Brazil international midfielder Juninho also slammed his club Vasco da Gama for "making the players suffer" with the late payment of wages and substandard club facilities.

Vasco is currently fourth in the league standings, just one point ahead of Sao Paulo, after the latter's 2-0 victory over the Rio club on Wednesday.
