MADRID, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona face a crisis in central defense after confirming that central defender Gerard Pique will be out for two to three weeks with a twisted ankle.
Pique had to leave the pitch after just 10 minutes of his side's 3-2 win over Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night after twisting his left ankle. Pique had attempted to remain on the pitch, but was forced off in obvious pain to be replaced by midfielder Alex Song.
The injury is made more serious by the fact that Barca captain, Carles Puyol will be sidelined for between four to six weeks with a knee injury, meaning the club will be without their first choice central defenders for the home match against Granada next Saturday and the trip to Sevilla the following weekend.
Javier Mascherano will play in the heart of the defense and the club have youngsters Marc Bartra and Andreu Fontas waiting for a chance, but with the "Classico" at home to Real Madrid scheduled for October 7, Barca will be hoping that Pique is fit in two rather than in three weeks.
