Makarova/Soares win U.S. Open mixed doubles

FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Bruno Soares and Russia's Ekaterina Makarova captured the US Open mixed doubles title on Thursday by beating Czech Kveta Peschke and Poland's Marcin Matkowski 6-7 (8), 6-1, 12-10.

Soares became the first South American player to win the title after runner-up efforts last year by Argentina's Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank and by Argentina's Mercedes Paz and Pablo Albano in 1997.

Peschke settled for a runner-up spot for the second time in three years, having lost in the 2010 final alongside Pakistan's Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.

Makarova ended the decisive tiebreaker with a baseline backhand that Peschke could only tap into the net after 89 minutes.

The pair is a pick-up team that registered to play with less than one minute remaining before the tournament deadline.

Soares said that he discovered moments before the sign-in on Aug. 17 that his ranking and that of his proposed partner, Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia, would not qualify them to enter the championship.

Makarova was practicing on a distant outside court, he said. Her ranking would qualify them, he said he was told.

"So I had to run, actually my coach did that. He went running all the way over there and talked to her and called me like 30 seconds to go and said, 'You can sign.'"
