RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's former Olympic swimming champion Cesar Cielo achieved the world short course 100m freestyle qualifying mark on Friday by claiming gold in the event during the Jose Finkel trophy in Sao Paulo.
Cielo won in a time of 45.91sec from Nicholas dos Santos (47.32sec) and Nicolas Oliveira (47.36sec).
"The time was much better than I was expecting," said Cielo, who earlier qualified for his pet event, the 50m freestyle. "To be honest I didn't feel good in the heat but it ended up being a good result."
The world short course swimming championship will be held in Istanbul in December.
Cielo, the 50m and 100m freestyle world record holder, took bronze in the 50m freestyle at the London Olympics having won the event in Beijing four years earlier. He finished sixth in the 100m final in London.
