SUVA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's National Golf Association said Tuesday that more international golf championships could be hosted in the Pacific island nation as golf will be included in the next Olympic Games in Rio.
Alongside sevens rugby, golf will be included in the next Olympic Games in Rio and the Olympic move now calls for more focus on developing the sport locally, local media quoted the association President Sitiveni Rabuka as saying.
"It is great news not only for local golfers but also keeping on our radar, golfers such as Vijay Singh who is undoubtedly the most successful golfer Fiji has ever produced. So we're looking forward to having them perform well until 2016."
According to Rabuka, his association "has been continuing the program and that is visiting schools and taking golf to students with our instructors picking up young golfers from schools in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka".
Rabuka said he is expecting the qualification process to be based on world rankings, therefore, the association will be bidding to host more international events in Fiji. So far, the Fiji International Open and Nomura Cup tournaments are examples of these.
Fiji has already had state-of-the-art golf courses at Natadola and Denarau.
After more than a century on the sidelines, golf will return to the Olympics at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
As the London 2012 closing ceremonies have wrapped up, Olympic junkies turn their sights to the southern hemisphere, where Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will host the 2016 Summer Games.
