LONDON, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Two-time Olympic fencing champion Mariel Zagunis led the U.S. team into the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games on Friday.
The 529-strong U.S. squad is the second largest behind the hosts at these Games.
Four years ago, the Americans won 36 gold medals and finished second in the gold medal count after China, which claimed an unprecedented 51 golds. But their total medal hual was 10 more than China.
Who will win the medal race is one of the biggest suspenses in London.
