JAKARTA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is scheduled to host annual World Badminton Federation (WBF) event from June 12 to 17, a senior official at Indonesian badminton association said here on Monday.
The tournament, entitled Djarum Indonesia Open Super Series 2012, will provide a total of 650,000 US dollars prize, or the second largest after South Korea Open super series that provided 1 million US dollars.
The prize is 50,000 US dollars higher than it was in the previous year, Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) Chairman Djoko Santoso said.
"This year we expect to win gold medals in men's singles and mixed doubles," Djoko told a press conference.
As other players had lackluster run in recent international badminton championships, Indonesia is relying on maverick men's singles player Simon Santosa and mixed doubles pair Ahmad Tontowi/Liliana Natsir, who won 2012 All England championship.
Djoko said that Indonesia will send 63 players to the 2012 Indonesia Open that will attract players from 26 countries and regions, including badminton powerhouses China and Denmark.
China dominated the Indonesia Open last year, sweeping four out of five gold medals at stake.
Head of the tournament organizing committee, Jacob Rusdianto, said that the defending singles champion, Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia, would likely miss the event because of an injury he sustained in the Thomas Cup.
He said that the committee has allocated prizes for men's and women's singles champions at 48,750 US dollars, and 57,350 US dollars for men's, women's and mixed doubles champions.
