Annotated Language: English

Targeted Students: Chinese beginners

Recommended Class Types: Short and medium term training programmes

As the comprehensive training materials of elementary Chinese, the Excel in Chinese: An Easy Starter series is written by teachers who teach Chinese as a foreign language in Xiamen University. The set of textbooks comes in three volumes. Based on International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education, the series lay emphasis on the combination of structures, functions and culture. It also draws attention to the circular advance of topics and language points. On the premise of improving students’ verbal communication skills, the series emphasizes on the characteristics of the Chinese language. It advocates learning vocabulary on the basis of learning Chinese characters, learning what is most commonly used in the first place, and a comprehensive study of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is particularly suitable for Chinese learners who hope to get an easy starter.

Considering the complexity of international Chinese language teaching, each volume only consists of 10 lessons. It is suggested that each lesson takes up 6 hours so that 10 lessons take up 60 hours in total. The series is divided into three volumes, taking up approximately 200 hours in total. Learners can reach the second level of International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education after learning the whole textbook with 300 most commonly used vocabulary which is equivalent to HSK level 2.

Excel in Chinese: An Easy Starter 1

Excel in Chinese: An Easy Starter 1 is designed for learners who know no Chinese to begin with. The textbook is divided into 10 lessons. According to the different emphases of teaching, these lessons can be divided as phonetic course (lesson 1-2), Chinese characters course (lesson 3-5), and comprehensive course (lesson 6-10). Owing to the particularity of phonetics and Chinese characters teaching, the first five lessons concentrate on in-class practice, with in-class exercises following each language point as well as after-class and pre-class exercises. Lesson 6-10 are comprehensive courses, which mainly consist of five columns: texts and new words; key points; exercises; character, word and sentence; and Chinese culture.
