Practical Medical Chinese Series, written by teachers who teach medical Chinese from nearly 20 universities in China, is divided into Elementary, Preclinical and Clinical. Elementary is intended for Chinese beginners majoring medical related areas, with its focus on cultivating their communicating ability in daily life, which will be gradually transited to communication ability in medical Chinese. Clinical, based on different departments in western clinical medicine, is coherent with the study of professional knowledge, thus building a solid foundation for their future clinical practice. It can be arranged either after the Elementary, or exclusively. Preclinical can be applied either as supplementary materials to the first and second year international students taught in English, or as preparatory course to the foreign students taught in Chinese. It can be used collaboratively with Elementary or separately.

Practical Medical Chinese: Elementary

Practical Medical Chinese: Elementary is mainly intended for international medical students in China who know no Chinese to begin with. There are 4 volumes involving 15 units respectively, and each volume can be used for one semester. The first volume combines the structure, function (daily life situations) and knowledge of Chinese language and Chinese social backgrounds, and lays emphasis on the training of communication in daily life. The other 3 volumes combines the structure, function (medical situations) and knowledge of medicine, and lays emphasis on the training of communication in medical situations. There are about 2400 words in it, covering most of the high-frequency ones and some of less common ones in the Outline of Vocabulary in Elementary of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Meanwhile, the proportion of specialized vocabulary will enlarge gradually, and reach 50% in the last volume. It is suggested that each unit in the first two volumes be finished in 6~8 teaching hours, while 4~6 teaching hours for the students who are taught in Chinese, and for each unit in the last two volumes 4~6 teaching hours.

This series has advantages as below:

Firstly, it deals well with the similarity and differences between Chinese in daily life and that in medical situations.

Secondly, it attaches great importance on repetition rate, which is critical for a textbook of second language/foreign language.

Thirdly, it makes good use of adults’ advantages such as rational thinking and knowledge background. Besides, it provides necessary Chinese culture background to help students learn the language.

Finally, it lays emphasis on speaking, which is the most important way of learning foreign language.

Practical Medical Chinese: Preclinical is a series of basic medical Chinese textbooks especially compiled for overseas students who come to China to study in the medical related majors. Being used in concert with Elementary or independently are both accepted. It can also serve as a taste of Chinese for English-taught beginners, and Chinese-taught students in the preparatory stage.

It is divided into four volumes, and each one includes ten lessons. The content keeps pace with the order of main courses of basic medicine in Grade One and Two: The first volume includes “the System of Anatomy” and “the Histology and Embryology”, the second one “the Genetics”, “the Physiology” and “the Biochemistry”, the third one “the Immunology” and “the Microbiology”, the fourth one “the Parasitology”, “the Pathology” and “the Pharmacodynamics”. In addition to its content, many functional sentences in the medical scenes are also included, with the basic vocabulary and common terms. The texts are organized in the form of conversation, and involves the major medical activities such as the outpatients admission, ward round, ambulance call, receiving guidance from the superior doctors, taking parts in the inter-departmental group consultation, communication with doctors, communication between doctors and nurses, the operative cooperation and so on. Learning scenes in medical school are included as well, such as the questions and answers between teachers and students, receiving guidance in the laboratories or of practice.

English-taught students of Grade One generally learn one lesson (six hours) per week when they study specialized courses and Elementary. For Grade Two, they are recommended to learn one lesson (four hours) per week, while Chinese-taught medical students who need extra language classes can have one lesson (four hours) per week. Preclinical covers a great deal of knowledge so that the teachers can decide how and what to teach according to their practical teaching plans.

Practical Medical Chinese: Clinical is a series of clinical medical Chinese textbooks especially compiled for senior international students who come to China to study in the medical related majors. The whole arrangement of teaching is for two years, and suggested to be arranged on Grade Four and Five. It is divided into four volumes: Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gynecology and Pediatrics, and Others. Each volume complements one another.
