SMU-SWUFE Global Forum on Managing Economic Transitions

English.news.cn   2014-10-21 14:10:11

Almost a year after the Decision of the CPC Central Committee on Major Issues Concerning Comprehensively Deepening Reform was announced at the Third Plenary Session of the Eighteenth CPC Central Committee in November 2013, there is an increasing concern on whether China can keep up with its fast economic growth amidst the comprehensive reform efforts. Major factors weighing down on China’s economic growth engine include challenges faced by the Chinese real estate industry, overinvestment and excess production capacity in selected industries. There is an opportunity to further reform China logistic industry and optimize both logistic financing and internet finance in order to unleash further economic growth in various regions including the Western China.

Given Singapore’s past experience in upgrading its economy, Singapore Management University (SMU) and Southwest University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) are co-organising the Global Forum on “Managing Economic Transition: Perspectives from China and Singapore” in Chengdu, China. The forum congregates leading scholars both universities, government officials, business leaders to discuss issues relating to China’s economic transition, including how certain aspects of the Singapore experience could be relevant to China’s context. It will also share findings from the latest research on China real estate industry, case-studies in logistic management and logistic financing. The forum will also look at the demographic changes and ageing in Southeast Asia as an issue for transitional economies.

This forum will feature distinguished speakers like Tsinghua University’s Prof LIU Hongyu who is Chairman of Specialist Committee of Housing Policy (Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development). Prof Liu also shared his views on housing policy with top China leaders in October 2013. It also features Texas A&M’s Prof GAN Li who is Director of China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) which has been actively followed by both leading scholars and media since 2009. We are honored to invite YCH Group’s Dr Robert YAP who is also President of Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF). YCH is the largest Singapore 3PL industry player and a world-acclaimed pioneer in 7PL with operations in 11 countries.

Key questions to be addressed at the forum:

1.What is the current health of the Chinese economy?

2.What is the next stage of the Chinese real estate industry?

3.How do further reform the logistics industry to fuel more economic development in various regions?

4.What are the new opportunities in Sino-Singapore economic partnership?

5.The relevance of the Singapore economic development experience in China?

6.Social and demographic issues for transitional economies in Southeast Asia?
