SMU-Fudan Global Forum on Development and Governance

English.news.cn   2014-03-29 15:38:23

BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhuanet) -- As China embarks on an ambitious reform agenda under the new leadership to manage the many new challenges in its next phase of development such as urban transformations, environmental degradation, income gaps, social integration, management of natural resources, maintaining a stable financial environment and increasing demands for greater political accountability, the question of governance has become highly complex.

In many ways, Singapore and many other countries face similar governance problems in their paths of development in a rapidly globalizing and digital world. The SMU-Fudan Global Forum in Shanghai, where a number of social innovations and pilot schemes for trade liberation and financial reform have been introduced, brings together leading experts from the two universities, as well as senior government officials and business leaders to address the need for new forms of governance involving multiple stakeholders.

Dr Liu Thai Ker, Singapore’s most well-known urban planner and a global thinker on issues related to urban change and development, is the Keynote Speaker at the Forum. He will share his thoughts on the experience of Singapore‘s urban transformation. Dr Liu is Founding Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Liveable Cities in Singapore. He was past CEO of Singapore Housing & Development Board and Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority. Dr Liu was Chairman of the design jury for the Beijing Olympic Master Plan competition in 2002.

In addition to the Keynote address, there will be a roundtable on “Future Governance” and a special lunch panel on “Free Trade Zones and Special Economic Zones/industrial Parks” including the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ). There are specialized panels in the afternoon cover the “Social Housing”, “Social Integration & Poverty”, “Managing Financial Turbulence - Lessons learnt on Financial Innovation from Lehman Minibond Crisis”. The SMU-Fudan Joint Research Centre will conduct a Joint Research Workshop to develop concrete research agenda in address these issues on 9 April 2014.

Some of the key questions include:

1. What are the implications of China’s reforms under the new leadership?

2. How can business, government and civil society collaborate more effectively on Governance issues?

3. How can major cities like Shanghai and Singapore become even more livable?

4. To what extend the Singapore experience is relevant for other countries?
