BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) -- President Xi Jinping on Sunday urged east China's Anhui Province, which spearheaded land reform in 1978 that broke up the previous commune-style collective farming, to actively deepen reforms in the area.
"On the basis of respecting farmer' wishes, the province should carry out reform pilots, and properly handle the relations between farmers and land to ensure the healthy and smooth proceeding of rural reforms," Xi said when joining a panel discussion with lawmakers from the province at the ongoing annual parliamentary session.
Rural land transfer shall not be forced: minister
BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- China's agricultural minister Han Changfu stressed Thursday that rural land transfer should be carried out in a gradual and orderly manner and shall not be forced as local governments rush to achieve their reform goals.
"Rural land transfer should be bound by law, made voluntarily, and with compensation," Han told the press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature. Full story

BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, in his first government work report, pledged Wednesday to make breakthroughs in reform as the country seeks growth impetus in face of downward pressure on its economy.

China spends billions on rural education
BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese central government has invested 61.8 billion yuan (10.1 bln U.S. dollars) improving schoolhouses and educational facilities in rural areas over the past four years.
Since 2010, 39.9 billion yuan from the central budget has been used in schoolhouse renovation and 21.9 billion yuan in educational equipment, said Liu Limin, deputy minister of education, at a press conference on Thursday. Full story
