KIEV, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said Friday his country is ready to provide technical assistance in destroying Syria's chemical weapons.

"We have the experience and the mobile units that are patented in Ukraine. These units have proved in practice to be effective, and we are ready to work with the experts of to use them for the most rapid destruction of chemical weapons in Syria," Yanukovych told the 10th International Yalta Meeting in Ukraine's southern Crimean peninsula.

Stressing the importance of peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict, Yanukovych said that Ukraine welcomes the decision to facilitate a solution to the Syrian crisis through political dialogues.

The 10th International Yalta Meeting opened Friday and gathered some 250 leading politicians, businessmen and public figures from more than 20 countries.

The event, launched in 2004, was jointly organized by the Yalta European Strategy group and Ukrainian media tycoon Viktor Pinchuk.

Last week, the United States and Russia agreed to place Syria's chemical arms under international control in a bid to avert a U.S. military strike on the Syrian government over the use of sarin gas near its capital of Damascus on Aug. 21, in which hundreds of people were reportedly killed.
