"App Slicing" feature arrives on iOS 9.0.2

English.news.cn   2015-10-08 19:26:21

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. phone maker Apple announced lately that it has added space-saving feature called "App Slicing" for its iOS 9.0.2.

The feature, also known as "App Thinning", is created to reduce the amount of storage space apps take in operating system version iOS 9.0.2 or higher by delivering optimized packages for specific devices.

According to Apple, the App Store will create and deliver different variants based on the specific devices. For instance, image resources are sliced according to their resolution and device capabilities. When the user installs an app, a variant for the user's device is downloaded and installed.

In other words, "App Slicing" allows users to download only the parts of an app needed for their devices, effectively saving storage space.

The feature should prove particularly useful for anyone with a 16GB device where storage space is more precious, the company said.

Such feature is also available on tvOS apps, operating system of newly-released Apple TV, it added.
