BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The ideal day and time to watch the Perseids meteor shower this year is early Thursday morning at around 04:00 Eastern time, according to NASA.
At that time, up to 100 meteors will be visible per hour.
It's a good year for Perseid meteors as it will offer a special sky spectacle.
Last year, the Perseid meteor shower peaked during the nights around a bright "supermoon". Lunar glare reduced the visibility of the Perseids.
The coincidence of the annual meteor shower with a new moon this week means the shooting stars will stand out against a particularly dark backdrop.
The Perseid meteor shower is caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle.
These space debris streak into the Earth's upper atmosphere at around 130,000 mph (about 209,215 km per hour), and disintegrate in flashes of light.
