BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the first prescription drug using 3-D printing technology had been approved.
Aprecia pharmaceuticals which first made the 3-D drug pointed out on Monday that the drug named "Spritam" was allowed to use inside the body as a prescription drug that is mainly for the treatment of epilepsy.
According to the company, this new type of tablet is manufactured by a 3D-printing layers of powdered drug and disintegrates in the mouth when taken with a sip of liquid, which is a welfare for the seizure sufferers who often are prescribed pills that are hard to swallow.
The 3D-printing technology plays a significant role in health system. In the U.S., doctors could use a 3D-printing repository sponsored by government to partake tool designs to aid in surgeries and treatments. What’s more, scientists are working on 3D-printed organs to help solve the problem of organ shortage.
Media review said the approval of Spritam suggests that it is safety for human to consume 3D-printed materials, which is an important step for future medical innovation.
