SOFIA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of malware attacks in Bulgaria's Internet environment during the first eight months of this year have increased four times on an annual basis, an official said Monday.
Kamen Spassov, Caretaker Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications (MTITC) made the statement at a seminar organized by Bulgaria's National Computer Security Incidents Response Team.
"Since the beginning of the year until the end of August, the authorities have registered more than 1,800 attempts to overcome the security mechanisms of the information systems into and from the Bulgarian Internet environment, such as stealing passwords and attachment of viruses," Spassov said according to the press office of MTITC.
The attacks with malicious software that could damage computer performance were 36 percent of the total number, which was a fourfold increase compared to last year, Spassov said.
A quarter of the threats were related to "denial of service", or massive attacks to a server or computer, he added.
This year, 244 cases have had a high degree of threat -- to government institutions, large organizations and enterprises, Spassov said.
In 2013, signals for computer threats were more than 9,000, and no damages have been registered, he said.
