BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- A bird nest weighing over 2000 pounds (about 907 kilograms) -- believed to be the world's largest -- has crushed a tree supporting it, the UK-based Wired Magazine reported recently.
Fortunately, its main structure remained intact as it is supported by some of the tree's branches.
The nest, six meters long, 4 meters wide and 2 meters high, was found on a semiarid plain between South Africa and Namibia.
Biologist Gavin Leighton with Miami University said the nest with about 100 cubicles inside may accommodate around 500 birds.
He added that the nest may have existed for over a century.
But excessive rainwater permeated the nest this summer that exceeded the maximum weight the tree could support. Part of the nest was damaged when the tree fell down.
