Asteroid causes cosmic black out of Regulus

English.news.cn   2014-03-20 16:20:53

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) --Shadow of a 72-km wide asteroid caused Regulus, one of the brightest stars in the sky, to black out for about 14 seconds, starting at 1:45 a.m. EDT on March 20.

This subtle star eclipse, or an occultation, occurred when the asteroid passed between the Earth and Regulus.

This astronomical event was visible only in New York or eastern Canada, where people could see it firsthand, according to Slooh.com, a space watching website.

The asteroid, known as Erigone, is 176 million km from Earth in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
